Hi, I’m Michael Kanell, MD. In addition to completing medical school at The Ohio State University and residency and fellowship in adult and forensic psychiatry, respectively, at the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center and UCLA, I also have completed the Adult Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy training at the New Center for Psychoanalysis and am certified in Intensive, Short-Term, Dynamic Psychotherapy by the International Experiential Dynamic Therapy Association. I have years of experience treating a broad spectrum of severe mental illness, including bipolar disorder, treatment resistant depression, and schizophrenia spectrum disorders in outpatient settings both in private practice and in the community. I have seen how a combination of judicious use of medication and attentive and person-centered psychotherapy can relieve people of life-impairing mental illness. Regardless of what has caused people to suffer, I believe that everyone has an innate capacity to make realistic change, improve their life, and grow past their suffering.
